COMING OUT DAY

This activity pursues to make visible and promote respect for any kind of sexual orientation in the schools.
The Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11 and was first celebrated in Unied States in 1988. The idea came from Robert Eichberg, psychologist and gay activist, and Jean O'Leary founder of the Lesbian Feminist Liberation. The date of October 11 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The idea is that homophobia grows in an atmosphere of ignorance and silence. Normalizing is the key to fight against it .

"Most people think they don't know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact, everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes."
                    (Robert Eichberg)

This project wanted to join the idea, so the four schools involved in it have celebrated this day using Instagram (@lgtb_at_school). Students and teachers recorded a video coming out from a wardrobe with Charlie Winston's song Boxes on our stories and we resposted them. It was our way to support any sexual orientation or gender identity in the schools. We were really surprised how by the success of this activity.
Here they are some examples of the video they recorded.
